Welcome to Kentucky!

"THERE IS A THREAT TO THIS BUILDING. EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY. FIND THE NEAREST STAIRWELL. DO NOT USE THE ELEVATORS."

WAHWAHWAHWAH

(repeat five million times)

6:30 am. The Hilton Garden Inn in Louisville.

I thought the person who had my room before me had set the alarm clock. Nope. We had to all evacuate the hotel. I sleepily rushed, put my jeans and coat on, grabbed my purse and laptop (and room key) and stumbled into the hallway.

Other sleepy people were stumbling around, too. We looked like a bunch of drunks. One guy was still trying to put his sneakers on.

At the stairway, a man actually held the door open for me.

We were on the top of the hotel, on the 8th floor. Down we went. As we hit each floor, more people in the stairwell. Quiet. Orderly. No complaints. Just trudge trudge trudge.

Good thing there wasn't a real fire, eh?

Got outside, went to the front of the hotel. Called Chris. Heard sirens. The first fire truck pulls up. We all wait some more. Another fire truck pulls up. Uh-oh.

Some people got in their cars and left.

Lucky bastards.

It was about 40 degrees, so it was chilly.

Finally, they let us back in.

Turns out the water boiler burst. No hot water for a while, so it'll be a nice cold shower for me, ha ha.

They were offering free breakfast, but I was still tired, so went up to my room and slept for another hour.

Welcome to Kentucky, Jayne!

Tale of the tape: Robbery suspect duct tapes shoes
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100327/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_duct_tape_thief

Maybe duct tape doesn't work for everything. Police said an 18-year-old Cadillac man who fastened duct tape to the bottom of his shoes in an attempt to conceal the robbery of a northern Michigan business has been arrested.

Manistee County sheriff officials said the man admitted robbing All Star Pay Day Loans in Manistee Township, about 210 miles northwest of Detroit. He was arrested about 3:35 a.m. Thursday after being spotted by deputies.

Police told the Ludington Daily News and WWMT-TV the man was wearing dark clothing and carrying about $1,200 in cash.

The man was being held at the Manistee County Jail. He faces charges including breaking and entering with intent, a 10-year felony.

Peabody Institute of Danvers Library Talk

Yesterday afternoon, Chris, Phoebe and I drove to Danvers, Massachusetts for my next talk - three true crime authors on a panel at the Peabody Institute Library of Danvers. With me were Margaret Press and Mary-Ann Tirone Smith. I've done a panel with the both of them before for Sisters in Crime.

I got there first, Chris and Phoebe stayed in the car. Mary-Ann came next and then Margaret made it with a minute to spare. . .literally. We had about 20-25 people show up. Then in the audience I spotted someone. My high school drill team buddy, Vicki! We hadn't seen each other in 34 years and discovered each other on Facebook recently. I was so excited!!

Us authors did our thing, talked about how we got into true crime, answered a lot of great questions from the audience, then waited for book sales. Not one person bought a book from any of us. Mary-Ann was the most shocked, LOL. I just kind of shrugged it off. Hey, I got paid to talk, albeit $75, but every dollar counts these days.

A warrant was issued for the woman for possession of a controlled substance and unlawful possession of a controlled drug with the intent to distribute. A Jackson County jailer said Wednesday the woman wasn't in custody.

Authorities said District III Drug Task Force agent Chris Counts received a text message that said, "if you want a hit of this stuff before it is all gone, you better get over here."

Counts sent a message asking for an address and determined that the suspect lived there. Officers said she thought she sent the message to a friend.

Authorities said they found a gun and a powdery substance during a search of the residence.

MySpace, Twitter and Facebook are just a few of the social networking sites banned from public schools and frowned upon by parents. It makes sense. In class, these websites distract students from doing their work and paying attention to their teachers. Students should be using the Internet for educational purposes, not socializing with their friends. There are many great resources available to students online. There are online encyclopedias, dictionaries and websites devoted to specific subjects. Students should focus on these resources.

Conway Public Library

Chris and Phoebe decided to come on the ride to the Conway Public Library with me last night. According to SamSam (the voice on our TomTom), it was going to take over 2 hours. Hrm? That didn't sound right, as getting to North Conway takes about an hour and half or so and Conway is before that.

We stopped at Wendy's for a quick dinner and ended up getting to the library at 635 pm, an hour and half ride. SamSam was wayway offoff.

Chris stayed in the car w/Phoebe and I brought a few books in with me. I had asked the librarian, Janis, how the previous Sisters In Crime talks had gone with the other true crime authors. She said only a few people showed up to each, so I only brought in five books with me.

Set up my table in front of two rows of five chairs each. Got some water, wandered around the room to look at photos a local photographer had taken, which were lovely. Check out Woodland Winds Photography.

I sat down and began doodling on a piece of paper. A man walked in the room, introduced himself and we began talking about the weather and such. Janis came in and asked if he was my husband. I said no, he was the audience! We laughed. It was 715, so Janis sat down and apologized for the low turnout, then asked me to go ahead.

So as I began talking about Sisters In Crime and what the organization is about. . .the lights go out. The emergency lights pop on, only one of which was on in the room we were in. Janis said she was setting the mood, we laughed, then she went to find out what was up.

I continued talking to this guy. Hey, they had me come to the library to talk, so talk I would. Janis came back and said the whole area was without electricity. I said as long as he wanted to hear me talk, I was up for it. She said okay and left again.

I asked him what brought him to my talk. He said he'd heard a show on NPR about how cyber experts are desperately needed and he wanted to know more. He asked how I got into the cyber crime field and I did a short version of my cyberstalking case.

Turns out this guy was part of ARPANET in the 1980s. He was as geeky as me! He was really interesting to talk with - he has a small computer repair business.

Janis came in and said she had to kick us out - they were closing up. He bought a book, I signed it, and we walked upstairs to the front door. He left and I shook hands with Janis and she apologized again for everything. I told her it was no big deal (it wasn't), the ride up was beautiful (it was), and just as I opened the door. . .the electricity came back on.

We laughed, said goodbye and I went to the car. It was 730. That was the fastest talk I'd ever given.

Chris had no clue the electricity had gone out - he'd been too busy surfing the web on his iTouch via the wifi from the library. He said when that went kaput, he switched to my iPhone.

So we drove home. It felt longer than it was. I hate driving in the dark. But it was an interesting night.

Bridesmaid's dress stolen hours before wedding

Delaware state police said someone broke into a car and stole a bridesmaid's dress just hours before a wedding on Friday at a shopping center in Pike Creek. Police said the bride and one of her bridesmaids were in a salon getting ready for the wedding.
When they got back to their car, they found that someone had stolen the pink dress the bridesmaid had planned to wear at the ceremony. A bag of accessories was also stolen.
The vehicle was not damaged. Police believe the thieves overrode the car's self-locking mechanism.
Police hoped to recover the dress in time for the ceremony.

Woman Charged for Squirting Breast Milk at Deputy
http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,588369,00.html

A Kentucky woman was charged with assault after she allegedly squirted breast milk into the face of a deputy, sparking online debate Sunday in the local media.

Toni Tramel, 31, was arrested Thursday for public intoxication in Owensboro, WYMT-TV reported, but it is what she did next which has attracted headlines.

As Tramel changed into an inmate uniform, she squirted a stream of breast milk[] into the face of the female deputy watching over her.

A press release from the Daviess County, Kentucky, Detention Center, said that after the deputy decontaminated herself from the "bio-hazard", Tramel was charged with third degree assault.

While the public drunkenness was merely a misdemeanor offense, the assault is a felony charge and a US$10,000 bond was set.

Reports of the case have sparked debates about whether using breast milk as a weapon should constitute a felony assault case, with many readers likening it to an accused person spitting on an officer.

Also sparking feedback has been the use of the term "bio-hazard" to describe breast milk.

WHOA Press Release #2010-2

OLDEST ONLINE SAFETY ORGANIZATION DISCLOSES CURRENT CYBERSTALKING STATISTICS

WHOA Shows How Online Trends Have Changed In the Past Ten Years

March, 2010 - Working to Halt Online Abuse (WHOA) released their 2009 cyberstalking statistics today, as well as cumulative statistics for the past ten years, from 2000-2009. WHOA is the oldest and largest all-volunteer online safety organization that has been continuously helping adult victims of cyberstalking since 1997. WHOA is the only online organization to provide the most up-to-date cyberstalking statistics and cumulative trends.

It is important to understand that WHOA statistics are not based on the total number of cases handled during the year. WHOA proprietary statistics represent complaints where victims actually completed questionnaires in their entirety. Criteria is distinguished because it comes only from those victims who fill out all of the voluntary demographic information in the questionnaires provided on the WHOA web site at haltabuse.org. Restricting the criteria used to completed, uniform cases helps to ensure comparable, verified and meaningful statistics.

According to WHOA president Jayne Hitchcock, “based on the individual needs of each victim, we work directly with law enforcement, victim assistance organizations and lawyers making every effort we can to help and support those who come to us for guidance. According to Internet World Statistics on December 31st, 2000 there were 360,985,492 Internet Users and as of February 12th, 2010 that number has grown to 1,733,993,741 representing an acceleration of 380.3% so it’s pretty clear the internet is still growing and internet harassment is not likely to lessen in the foreseeable future.”

WHOA has developed a database of reliable cyberstalking demographic criteria based on the information it received from victims and, while absolute verification is not 100% possible, the data from victims is considered to be credible and realistic. Since WHOA began compiling completed questionnaires in 2000, the total so far is 2,739 cases, of which 220 occurred in 2009. Females are still the primary victims with a 7% increase over 2008, but the gap between male and female harassers is rapidly shrinking as the years go by and now there is only a 10% difference, when in the beginning, almost all the harassers were male. Trends in 2009:

• Victims by age groups stayed about the same with the exception of ages 18 to 31, which showed an increase of 7%

• WHOA had more Asian and African-American victims who requested help in 2009 - in the 220 cases, victims by race: Caucasian dropped by 4.5%, Hispanic dropped by 3.5%, Asian and Afro-American victims increased by 4.5% and 4%, respectively; the remainder were Native American, East Indian or unknown

• Single victims increased in 2009 from 31.5% to 43% and married victims showed an increase from 18.5% in 2008 to 27% in 2009

• Victims who knew their harassers in 2009 showed an increase of 4% over 2008 – what was surprising is that family members and students jumped in numbers as harassers;

• Harassment statistics by exes went down by 2% in 2009, however, harassment by friends went up 1.5%, by co-workers it grew 1.5%, and harassment by online acquaintances increased by a dramatic 14% (from 8% to 22%) while family harassment escalated from 8% to 14%.

• As in previous years, the initial harassment began via email first, no matter where they may have encountered their harasser (if they did). Second was IM, message boards, Facebook and web sites. In 2008 it was email, message boards, IM, then Myspace, which shows how Facebook has not only become more popular, but a popular place to harass. It is also interesting that texting, Craigslist, online dating and online games saw a big bump. Breakdown of where harassment started: Email – 34%; MSG Board (Message boards, groups, usenet) – 8.5%; IM – 13%; Chat – 6%; Web Site – 7%; Facebook – 5.5%; Phone – 2.5%; Myspace – 5.5%; Dating – 2.5%; Craigslist – 2.5%; Texting – 2.5%; Gaming – 2.5%; and Other (auctions, blogs, Youtube, Twitter, hacking, mailing list, Juicy Campus) 8.5%

• In cases where harassment escalated online, email was a first choice, followed by message boards, telephone calls, text messages and Facebook

• Threats of offline violence dropped from 25% to 16.5% in 2009

• Victims were good about trying to report harassment themselves before coming to WHOA, but nearly half reported it to police when their cases did not involve anything criminal. 46% reported abuse to the harasser’s ISP, web host, moderator, Facebook, etc., but felt they did not get any results.

• WHOA was able to help victims resolve their cases 77% of the time, meaning that victims listened to WHOA advocates and hopefully learned how to stay safer online in the future. Resolution included having victims change emails/ISP(s)/usernames and/or passwords, contacting the harasser’s ISP(s), web site hosts/owners, Facebook, moderators, social networking sites, etc.

• California held the lead for the 10th year with the highest number of victims at 13% (although that is down 1% from 2008) and the highest number of harassers at 9% (down 4%); Texas moved New York out of 2nd place in 2008 with 7% victims and 5.5% harassers in 2009; New York went down from 7% victims in 2008 to 4% in 2009 and from 12% harassers in 2008 to 4.5% in 2009;

• Only 36% of cases we received found the victim and harasser were in the same state or country, showing that the Internet knows no boundaries when it comes to online harassment and cyberstalking. This is why it's so important that when law enforcement does get involved in a case that they try to work with the other state/country's law enforcement.

WHOA’s president, Jayne A. Hitchcock, is a cybercrime expert who trains law enforcement from the local to federal levels, and assists the US Department of Justice Office (USDJO) for Victims of Crime and National Center for Victims of Crime. She trains advocate groups, conducts seminars, raises awareness of cybercrime and harassment, and lectures educators, librarians, parents and students at middle schools, high schools, colleges and universities about the dangers of cyberbullies, online predators, cyberstalkers and social networking sites. She has appeared as an expert in various media, including America’s Most Wanted, PEOPLE magazine, Primetime Thursday with Diane Sawyer, TIME magazine, the Associated Press, Cosmopolitan magazine, A&E’s Investigative Reports, 48 Hours, Ladies Home Journal, Campus Security Reports, Inside Edition, Good Morning America and CNN. Her latest book, Net Crimes & Misdemeanors 2nd edition (netcrimes.net), highlights online crimes, how to be safer online and what to do if you are victimized. Video Professor also released a 3-CD tutorial based on the book.

WHOA is the oldest and largest all-volunteer online safety organization helping adult victims of online harassment and cyber stalking since February, 1997. WHOA-KTD was added in 2005 to help online victims under the age of 18, their parents and other adults interested in keeping kids and teens safer online.

To schedule an interview with Hitchcock, contact her at 815-550-5059 or email whoa@haltabuse.org. Statistics may be quoted in media and on web sites with appropriate recognition to WHOA. To learn more about WHOA, or if you know someone who needs help, please visit www.haltabuse.org and www.haltabusektd.org

Police say two Florida teenagers are facing charges after 911 dispatchers heard them talking about breaking into cars when one teen's cell phone accidentally called 911 during a heist. Daytona Beach police say 19-year-old Stefanie Vargas and a 13-year-old boy are charged with burglary to a conveyance.

Police spokesman Jimmie Flynt says dispatchers listened as the pair discussed what was worth taking while rummaging though a vehicle parked near a Daytona Beach nightclub early Sunday.

Officers went to the area and spotted the boy inside a vehicle. A police report says the pair tried to flee in a sport utility vehicle driven by Vargas. The report says both admitted to the robbery.

It's unclear how the number got dialed.
