Kents Hill School Presentation

Had a repeat "performance" at Kents Hill School (about 2 hours north of my house in Maine) on Thursday, October 22nd. I was excited about going back because I really enjoyed the campus - it's a private school with under 300 students and a wonderful teacher to student ratio. Honestly, if I won the lottery, I'd send Chris' kids to this school for some quality education.

I had asked Chris Gibson, the Tech guy from Kents Hill who booked me, if I could bring Phoebe. She's still been depressed about Bandit dying and it turns out the Kents Hill school mascot is a Husky! He said yes, but she'd have to stay in the car for my student talk. Cool beans!

So Phoebe and I left home at 730 am, listened to Jonathan Kellerman's latest book "Evidence" and arrived at Kents Hill at 930 am. Walked w/Chris to the new auditorium to set up my laptop and we chatted for a bit before students came in.

At a little after 10 am, I began my talk. I start with cyberbullying, online predators (I show a short video of a teen girl who ran off w/a 56-year-old man she met online), then get into the social networking sites, especially Facebook.

And that's when I show them what I found when they approved my alter ego as a friend. Photos of them drinking alcohol, giving the finger, and other fun stuff.

This is what I found:

66 students were asked to be a friend of my alter ego
40 approved my alter ego as a friend within ONE day
10 asked who I was, but 7 still approved me
7 asked to add me as a friend (on their own without a request) for a total of 69
65% were boys; 35% girls
32% listed their cell phone number - 75% of those were boys
9 boys also listed their home phone
55% listed their AIM screen name
63% listed an email address (sometimes two)
4 boys listed their home address
7 boys and 1 girl listed where they work

It's so hard to get through their heads sometimes that what they post online does NOT go away, even if they delete it. If they make a mistake now and remove it, it most likely can and will be found and used against them.

The only question I got at the end was "Who is your alter ego?" Like I'm gonna tell them! No other questions. You could tell they were thinking about how many of their 900 or so "friends" they really did know and if they had posted something they should remove quickly.

Chris was pleased - yay! We walked to my car to get Phoebe, walked her around to let her go pee, then went to the library to see if any students came by to talk privately with me. One girl came up to pet Phoebe and did talk a bit - she was very sweet. I gave her a Girl Force book (http://www.mygirlforce.com). More students came by to pet Phoebe and talk. One boy just totally opened up and basically told me a lot about his life. I swear, Phoebe gets people to open up. I am seriously thinking of getting her trained to be a therapy dog!

After the library, we got in the car to drive to the dining hall and I left Phoebe in the car while we ate lunch with some staff, then went into an adjoining room for a Technology Committee meeting with more staff. One student showed up for that meeting and he asked some great questions. So did the staff. I was encouraged because they were asking and really listening!

Chris and I walked to the school bookstore, where they let me pick out a sweatshirt with the Kents Hill Huskies logo on it. I ended up getting a fleece-lined gray zip up hoodie. Warm and cozy!

Phoebe and I left for home at about 130 pm and I was happy with the day. Long, but fruitful, I think!!!!

RIP Bandit Bear

Bandit hasn't been doing well. At night, he'd bark and howl and we weren't getting any sleep, even with the meds the vet gave us to try to help him sleep. Saturday night he threw up, had a seizure and stopped barking. Yesterday the seizures weren't as big, but still happened and we had to hold him up to go to the bathroom and eat. We took him to the vet today around noon. We stroked him and thank goodness he went faster than Guin did. I think he was ready to go - after all, he was 17 years old. I told him to play with Guin in Heaven (she died on December 15th).

GOSSAU, Switzerland – Authorities say an Italian man took reckless driving to new heights in 11 frantic minutes of traffic violations in eastern Switzerland.

They say they first spotted the 47-year-old driver as he sped his jeep past an unmarked police car at 160 kph (100 mph) in a rainstorm Sunday.

Driving dangerously close to other cars on the autobahn, he then allegedly ignored police attempts to pull him over first with a stop sign, and then with flashing lights and sirens.

Police say the man drove through a construction zone at 140 kmh (87 mph), nearly twice the speed limit, before being stopped.

They seized the man's driver's license, and a judge ordered him tested for medications and illegal drugs.

Police said Monday the man racked up 15 traffic violations in 11 minutes.

Man, 81, finishes race after borrowing a catheter
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/us_odd_marathon_catheter

Organizers of the Twin Cities Marathon said they won't disqualify an 81-year-old runner who won his age group after using a borrowed catheter. Jerry Johncock of Shelbyville, Mich., was sidelined at an aid station about 21 miles into Sunday's race because a blood clot prevented him from urinating. The aid station had no catheter, but a spectator stepped forward to offer Johncock a catheter he had in his car.

Aides helped insert the catheter and Johncock went on to finish in a little over 5 hours 22 minutes.

Race officials considered disqualifying Johncock because of a rule against improper assistance. But executive director Virginia Brophy Achman said they decided Johncock didn't break the rule.

She called Johncock "a great role model and example of what you can do as a runner."

Johncock's wife, Dorlene, said her husband was cheered by the ruling. She said he found the whole situation a little humorous.

Waterville, Maine Schools Presentation

The Central Maine School District hired me to come speak to faculty (and some parents) from the various schools in their district about students staying safer online. I drove two hours to Waterville, Maine to give the presentation on October 6th - a two hour presentation, so seven hours total (one was setup).

About 60 people attended and three were school resource officers, which was great! I got a lot of great questions and feedback and I am hoping some of the schools will book me to speak to students and parents at their schools.

I did my usual of my alter ego asking students to be friends on Facebook, then showed my results to the attendees:

70 were asked to be a friend of my alter ego
67 approved my alter ego as a friend
Only 5 asked who I was but they still approved me
30 were boys; 37 girls
40% listed their cell phone number in their profile - 55% of those were girls
1 girl also listed her home phone
65% listed their AIM screen name
95% listed an email address (sometimes two)
3 boys and 2 girls listed their home address
5 boys and 2 girls listed where they work
2 boys and 3 girls listed their Myspace URL

Note: I never respond to messages sent to my alter ego. I just make note of who emails me and if they ask who I am, then if they still approve me. There is never any interaction w/ my alter ego's friends.

Then I showed the photos I found: One of two girls holding up glasses of what looked like beer; two photos of girls holding up their breasts (yes, they were dressed, but the shots were provocative), one of a group of young boys and girls dancing in their underwear and a screen shot of some of the quizzes these under 18 kids do - my fave was "Which drunken bitches are you?"

Then, of the students who posted their home address, I showed how easy it was to get a map to their house and other info.

Needless to say, my "Internet Scared Straight" presentation worked.

I couldn't make this up if I tried. . .The Nintendo Wii had better watch out

Nobody move or the iPhone gets it
http://www.tgdaily.com/content/view/44184/97/

Proof, were it needed, that some people really shouldn’t be allowed out on their own, reaches us from Cincinnati, where a whackjob threatened to pop a cap in his recalcitrant iPhone’s sorry ass in front of horrified Apple staff.

38 year old Ohio man Donald Goodrich was arrested Friday for brandishing a stylish black 9mm pistol at his local Apple Store in Kenwood Towne Centre and threatening to shoot his iPhone because it wasn’t showing him enough respect.

Goodrich walked up to the Genius Bar, and screamed: "I'm so mad, I could pop a 9mm at it. I’ll do it right now! Look!" He then opened his shirt, revealing a concealed weapon.

Apple worker Chelsea Levine attempted to calm Goodrich by taking him over to a technician saying they’d fix the phone, while her manager called the cops. When they arrived they arrested Goodrich for aggravated menacing, as employees and customers quite reasonably said they had felt threatened by his actions.

Although Goodrich has – or at least, had – a permit to carry concealed weapons, he failed to mention to the cops that he was packing heat when he was arrested, so he was charged with carrying a concealed weapon as well.

Goodrich was held in jail overnight and released on condition that he stays away from the mall and promises to return for the court hearing.

The iPhone is receiving counselling. There’s an app for that. Probably.

A nice email I received this morning

Got this in my email this morning - it made my day:

"I was reading the article of what happened to you when you tried to do the right thing and I wanted to say that no one should have to go through such. I've been trying to get published and have seen all sorts of scams, though fortunately I've not yet fallen for them, and can understand to what lengths people will go through to get what they think will be their revenge. I also play a fantasy character in a role play game on AOL and have individuals who developed very bad grudges against me for interactions between our characters in which my character was able to be proven better than theirs at something. There was one who went so far as to try to accuse me of murdering her best friend - in real life not in the game - to try to force me to stop gaming. These accusations, of course, were always proven false and the individuals, themselves, were always the ones who ended up in trouble for it. I am very proud that someone has the guts to stand up and say NO when someone else tries to use pressure and threats to get them to capitulate and your work on getting cyber-harassment and abuse criminalized so it can be stopped is important and is work I, for one, am very grateful for."
