Burglars steal hair from Chicago business
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110425/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_chicago_hair_heist

Chicago police have a real head-scratching case on their hands as they try to root out who stole human hair from a beauty-supply company.

Police say the theft of what they consider a "very valuable" amount of hair was taken early Sunday by burglars of the Beauty One shop.

Authorities say the culprits pried open a huge steel door that had been secured with two deadbolt locks, then swiped the hair.

No dollar amount for the hair was given, and there was no immediate explanation why thieves would want it.

A police sergeant says he's been to a lot of robberies, but never one involving hair.

I couldn't make this up if I tried...They go gaga over Lady Gaga
Whales can't resist a catchy pop tune: study
http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20110414/sc_afp/scienceaustraliamusicanimaloffbeat_20110414160558

Humpback whales love a good hit single, and every year a new catchy pop tune spreads among the male underwater crooners, said an Australian study released Thursday.

The men are the only ones who sing, likely in the hopes of making some lady whale swoon, according to the research published in the US journal Current Biology.

If there is a whale version of the King of Pop, he likely resides off the coast of eastern Australia, because that is where the popular tune of the season has always originated for the past decade, researchers said.

The hit-making tune then ripples eastward across the South Pacific Ocean, from Australia to French Polynesia, infecting genetically distinct groups of whales who all start singing the same song during breeding season.

In typical pop music fashion, the tunes are not all that original most of the time, said researcher Ellen Garland, a graduate student at The University of Queensland.

"It would be like splicing an old Beatles song with U2," Garland said. "Occasionally they completely throw the current song out the window and start singing a brand new song."

The 11-year study described itself as the "first documentation of a repeated, dynamic cultural change occurring across multiple populations at such a large geographic scale."

What remains a mystery is why the whales all sing the same song, when presumably their efforts are meant to make them stand out against the pack.

"We think this male quest for song novelty is in the hope of being that little bit different and perhaps more attractive to the opposite sex," said Garland.

"This is then countered by the urge to sing the same tune, by the need to conform."

The Internet is a wonderful thing, most of the time. I found out about the power of the Internet this week, after writing a column about Bryan Stow, the San Francisco Giants fan who is still in a medically induced coma following a beating he took from two Los Angeles Dodgers fans. It happened at Dodgers Stadium on opening day, and I questioned Stow's judgment when I wrote this: "Maybe somebody can ask Stow, if he ever comes out of his coma, why he thought it was a good idea to wear Giants gear to a Dodgers' home opener when there was a history of out-of-control drunkenness and arrests at that event going back several years."

Boy cries on video because he can't be NJ governor
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110401/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_too_small_to_be_governor

As Internet infant videos go, it's not as viral as the nattering twins or the baby that reacts to mom's sneezes.

But a YouTube clip shows a 4-year-old New Jersey twin crying because he can't be governor of New Jersey.

When Jesse Koczon's mom asks why he was upset, Jesse responds, "'Cause everyone tells me I'm too small to be the governor of New Jersey."

Dawn Koczon told the Asbury Park Press the video was taped on Election Day 2009 after Koczon and her husband took Jesse and his brother to the polls in Old Bridge.

Gov. Chris Christie responded on Twitter: "Don't worry Jesse, people gave plenty of reasons why I couldn't be Governor, though being too small wasn't one of them."

Advancement in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has come with its own costs prominent among them are the new forms that violence against women has assumed. According to the UN, 95% of aggressive behaviour, harassment, abusive language and degrading images in online spaces are aimed at women. It seems that women are even more susceptible in the virtual world than they are in the real one. But by and large they are not aware of the hazards they are exposed to when using technology, much less how to fight them.
