Volunteer Webmaster needed ASAP

I'm president of WHOA (haltabuse.org) and WHOA-KTD (haltabusektd.org). We desperately need a new webmaster to update the site. I would like to keep the current design, but at this point if someone wants to redesign both sites and add new info, I'll go with it.

Quite honestly, if we cannot find a new webmaster, we may have to shut down both organizations.

Please reply here or via email (whoa@haltabuse.org) if you are interested. Feel free to pass this info on or post elsewhere!

WHOA and WHOA-KTD are all-volunteer (we are NOT non-profit, so we don't have money)

1. All positions are volunteer and not paid positions
2. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old, or they must have reached the age of majority in their native country if that age is younger than 18.
3. If you have an active online harassment/stalking case (with WHOA or any other organization), we ask that you wait until it is resolved to begin
volunteering. (You need your energy for your own case right now.)
4. WHOA staffers must not be affiliated with any other online safety organization.
5. WHOA staffers must uphold our mission statement.
6. Must have an excellent command of the English language. All official WHOA communication is done in English.
7. Stable, reasonably secure internet access, with the ability check email at least daily.

Description

Must be well-versed in HTML, uploading files to servers, etc. You must be reliable and can put in a lot of time at first to catch up with the changes needed, then be available 1-2 hours a week at the most for updates.

Man pushes would-be suicide off bridge
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20090525/od_nm/us_jumper_odd

A Chinese man was pushed off a bridge by an angry passer-by after his threat to commit suicide held up traffic for five hours, Chinese media reported on Saturday.

Retired soldier Lian Jiansheng, 66, broke through a police cordon and reached out to shake the hand of would-be jumper Chen Fuchao before shoving him off the bridge.

"I pushed him off because jumpers like Chen are very selfish. Their action violates a lot of public interests," Lai was quoted as saying by the China Daily newspaper.

"They do not really dare to kill themselves. Instead, they just want to raise the relevant government authorities' attention to their appeals."

Chen, 2 million yuan ($293,200) in debt because of a failed building project, fell 8 metres (yards) onto a partially inflated emergency air cushion and was hospitalized with wrist and back injuries. Lai was detained by police.

Chen was at least the twelfth person since early April to threaten suicide at the same spot, the Haizhu bridge in Guangzhou. But none jumped and -- until Lian gave Chen a helping hand -- none was pushed.

Ellsworth Middle and High School Talks

On Thursday, May 14th, I got to speak at Ellsworth High School. It was a long drive up, about 3 1/2 hours and thank goodness I had audiobooks on my iPod Touch. Stayed at a Holiday Inn (nice hotel) and my first talk was at 12:20 for the high school students. Like the other schools I've talked at, my alter ego on Facebook began asking students to be friends when I knew I'd be coming to the school. I asked 60 of them to be my friend. Only three asked who I was and two of those still added me as a friend (er, my alter ego). Out of the 60, all but one accepted me as a friend.

Once I was their friend, I had access to all the info and photos they posted there. This came as a shock to all of the students when I asked them how they thought they did. Of the 59 who did accept my alter ego as a friend:

60% were boys; 40% girls
40% listed the cell phone number - 75% of those were boys
7 boys also listed their home phone
65% listed their AIM screen name
64% list an email address (sometimes two)
3 boys listed their home address
6 boys and 1 girl listed where they work

For the most part, the photos were good - mostly about sports, plays at school, vacations, etc. I didn't really find much wrong with those.

It was when I went to Myspace that the photos part went downhill. I again looked at 60 profiles, some were names that had approved me as Facebook, but had public profiles on Myspace. You don't need to friend anyone to see public profiles on Myspace. The results:

60 profiles were looked at
33% were boys
67% were girls
Just over half marked their profiles private
27% were boys
73% were girls
But 11 listed their first and last name as their profile name or in their profile
And half of those were Private Profiles

The photos? A lot of underage drinking, giving the finger and posing with guns (the guns may or may not have been real, but come on, DON'T be posting things like that, even in "fun")

To say the students were shocked was an understatement. Then when I got into sexting (sending semi-nude or nude photos via cell phone), they were even more shocked when they realized it's considered child porn (after all, they are all under 18) and they could be jailed and have a criminal record for the rest of their lives.

I had several students come up afterward telling me they thought it was going to be another boring, ho-hum presentation, but I brought it home to them by focusing on their school. Which is why I do what I do best.

Next was the middle school students and they were almost as good. Although I didn't show the photos (which I am going to do from now on - these kids are getting more tech-savvy and smartass each day), I think they got the point.

That night, I talked with parents. Some kids showed up with their parents, which was a first. A good recount of that is on the local newspaper web site - EHS Students Learn About Internet Safety.

The parents listened intently and were a good audience, but the best response I got was from April, who booked me to speak. She told me that I was just as advertised and she was very happy with me.

Yay!!

The bad thing was that the F keys on my little Sony Vaio laptop died on me, so I had to borrow a school laptop to do my presentations. Good thing I had a USB flash drive. I ended up doing some research at Barnes & Noble and found a new small "Netbook" that fits my needs. I don't need a CD/DVD drive since I use it just for traveling, hooking up to a LCD projector for my PowerPoint presentations and to check email, etc. So I ended up with a sweet new computer - an ASUS Eee PC Model 1000HEB. It's got a 160 gig hard drive, up to 7 hours battery life, Windows XP (I hate Vista), a full size keyboard and it weighs just 3 pounds. I love it!

Up in Tazewell, Wanda Bray slings a mean bowl of chili. Quite literally. Claiborne County Sheriff's Capt. David Honeycutt said Bray was confronted by men who broke into her home Tuesday night and she fought back by throwing what was described as "household objects" at them, including a bowl of homemade chili.

Then, according to The Knoxville News Sentinel, the 58-year-old Bray went after the intruders with a broom. They fled.

Police later arrested three men and charged them with the home invasion robbery and with a recent convenience store holdup.

Honeycutt said the intruders demanded drugs from Bray and probably got away with a bottle of blood pressure pills.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090509/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_wrong_address;_ylt=ApsAcpQOxI87FVWbbCxJd.btiBIF

MONROE, La. – If you're going to buy something with a forged cashier's check, don't misspell "cashier's" or use an FBI office as your shipping address.

Police in Monroe, La., say they arrested a 44-year-old man from Memphis, Tenn., after he did both. He was held Friday on two counts of forgery and as a fugitive from justice in Georgia, where he is accused of a similar scheme.

The FBI called police Thursday after a Minnesota cell phone distributor called the bureau.

The company had sent 50 phones to the address for the FBI office Monroe, only to discover its $2,359.45 payment was a "cahier's check".

FBI agents saw the suspect wave down a delivery truck driver outside the bureau later Thursday, stopped the transaction and waited for police.

What the frell hit me?

And before any of you smartasses write something like "what were you drinking?" I was NOT drinking any alcohol.

Went to lunch with my friend Robin. We both had the cheesesteak sub. I only ate half of that and the fries and brought the rest home for Chris. At around 3pm we drove by Joanne's house to pick up some things she wanted to be brought to the dump (town dump is open on Wed & Sat). As we were driving to the dump, my stomach started acting squirrely. I thought I was going to hurl a couple of times and almost asked Chris to pull over.

We got home and my stomach was still feeling weird, now my neck and the top of my shoulders were aching like I'd been lifting something really heavy. I asked Chris if we were going to "hot tub" later and he said of course. I thought that would help.

I started the oven and put a whole roasting chicken in. I went down to my office to work on some things for a trip for next week (presentations at two schools) and my stomach got worse. As I walked up the stairs, suddenly I was dizzy, the nausea was worse, my throat felt like I was swallowing glass and swollen, I ached all over and I was freezing, even though I was in my jeans, sweater and sweatshirt on top of that.

Chris was outside and I was too weak to even call him, so I went directly to bed, pulling the covers up over my clothes. I was still freezing. I began to drift in and out and he came in the house looking for me. When he found me, I told him I felt awful.

That was at around 4pm. I remember he checked in on me a few times and once told me my forehead was really warm. I finally got up at 745 pm, dragging myself to the couch.

I managed some saltines with peanut butter and orange sherbert. We watched some funny video show, then LOST, then it was back to bed, this time in my jammies.

I slept pretty much all night, I remember Chris kissing me this morning and letting me sleep. He came in a couple of times and I got up at 930 am. I was hungry even though my head felt like it was stuffed with cotton balls and I was still a bit nauseous. He made me scrambled eggs and bacon. I managed a bit of the eggs and one slice of bacon when I had to put the plate down. I thought I was going to hurl.

Now I'm trying to catch up on things so that I can go back upstairs and crash.

It can't be food poisoning because Robin and Chris are fine. So I don't know what hit me. All I know is I feel like crap.

Outhouses cushion small plane crash in Wash state
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20090503/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_toilets_crash;_ylt=AoBobnEIyeUtlj_Fd4axnhrtiBIF

PUYALLUP, Wash. A small airplane dropping from the sky after its engine failed wound up on a cushioning bunch of portable toilets and the pilot was able to walk away apparently unhurt.

Gary Mayor of the Federal Aviation Administration says the Cessna 182 crashed Friday afternoon in Washington state after taking off from Thun Field, an airfield owned by Pierce County southeast of Tacoma.

Sheriff's spokesman Ed Troyer says the plane was about 150 feet in the air when the engine quit.

Troyer told The News Tribune that the pilot tried to turn around to land but didn't quite make it.

The plane hit a fence, flipped over and landed upside down on top of the portable toilets standing in a storage yard.

Authorities didn't immediately give the pilot's identity.
