Amazing "Disney" Moment

I've got my own personal "wildlife" sanctuary out back: Most of you know about my chipmunks, Chippy (who sits in my hand to eat), Sweetie and Julian; Troublemaker the squirrel with a broken tail and scars on his back; a little red squirrel I haven't named yet; the cardinals Ralph and Alice; one of the chickadees I call Braveheart because he's the only one who will sit on the bird feeder when I bring food out; the bluejays who swoop in as a gang and swoop out; a lone crow who skulks in and out while his buddies caw up in the trees; a mole who made a home in the backyard a few weeks ago; Bernie the turtle (the babies should be hatching soon; a group of mourning doves I called "the ladies;" various finches, grackles, and other birds that hang out. And then I had an amazing thing happen yesterday.

I was on the deck putting out sunflower seeds for the chipmunks when I heard a weird "thrumming" sound. I stopped and stood still. Buzzing in front of me was a gorgeous hummingbird. He was literally a couple of inches from my face. He just stared at me, his wings beating so fast I could barely see them. I almost held my breath. He came in closer, touched my hair with his beak, fell back a bit and just kept staring at me. He then flew down to the hummingbird feeder, around it, then back to me and looked at me while he hovered. I could actually feel a breeze from his wings beating. Then he took off.

Well. I felt like I was in a Disney movie. That hummingbird told me to put fresh food in his hummingbird feeder. And I darned well did. And he came back today, happy as a clam (I'm guessing he was, ha ha).

What a weird and wonderful experience.

Fame finds 4-eared feline thanks to Internet photo
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20080823/ap_on_fe_st/odd_four_eared_cat;_ylt=AlxG_Y_7JbJMFEQJuH4G2TftiBIF

The owners of Yoda a cat with four ears could use a couple extra hands to answer their telephones.

Ted and Valerie Rock said they've been inundated with television offers and media inquiries since their son posted a photo of their smoke-colored cat on a Web site. That turned the four-eared feline from a suburban animal oddity into an instant Internet celebrity.

The Rocks, from the Chicago suburb of Downers Grove, have fielded calls from "Good Morning America," "Fox News" and "The Tyra Banks Show." The cat's photo has graced the London Guardian and a British tabloid. The Daily Mail said if Batman had a cat, it would be Yoda.

"It's amazing," Ted Rock said. "For the past few days, our phone has just been ringing off the hook."

Yoda's extra ears give him a hint of a devilish appearance. The Rocks said they found him in 2006 while watching a Chicago Bears game at a Blue Island bar.

Some in the bar were passing the then-eight-week old kitten around, making fun of his extra set of ears, mocking his appearance and calling him names such as "Devil Cat" and "Beelzebub."

It wasn't quite love at first sight, but the Rocks felt sorry for the cat and offered to adopt the kitten from the bar's owner, who kept the animal caged atop the bar for his customers' amusement.

Moving forward, not moving on. . .

I know some of my late husband's friends were surprised I found someone else and got married so "fast." It was just one of those things that happened. And after losing two men in two days who I loved and cherished, I realized that life is too short to not be happy.

I remember when I met my current husband, Chris, online. We exchanged emails and phone calls in July of last year and from the beginning it was strictly a friendship. He needed someone to talk to, as did I - at least someone who wasn't closely associated with us or family. It was kind of like psychotherapy for us both. I encouraged him and he encouraged me. I cried over the phone and he did, too. We had a lot of things happening personally to us both that we couldn't share with anyone but us. He helped me. . .a lot. I helped him. . .a lot.

I was dating some people I'd met online and my construction guy, which Chris knew. He still wanted to meet in person for lunch, mainly to put a face with the voice and emails and to thank me for being such a good friend.

That was a year ago today, at Hampton Beach. I remember driving there, on my cell phone with him, trying to find him. When I did, it was one of those "uh-oh" moments. But a good "uh-oh." He was much better looking than the photos he'd sent me, he was very tall, and his eyes just blew me away.

We had lunch and were shy at first, but soon began talking like we did over the phone. We just clicked. But because he wanted to be just friends, we kept it neutral. We did walk along the boardwalk for a bit, then when I left he gave me a big hug. It felt good and on the way home, I had mixed feelings about the whole thing.

When we talked that night, he admitted he was blown away when he met me. But we agreed that being friends was better, because he lived three hours away.

Well, that went down the tubes the next week when he was supposed to get a newer used car to meet me for lunch in Marlborough, Mass (a halfway point for us both). He was frustrated and said he had a couple of presents for me. The next thing I knew, he called and was driving his beat up truck to Maine. . .at 2 in the morning.

We talked and things went from there. I don't even remember what the presents were.

He is a patient man. He told me he was going to steal me away from the others I was dating. And he did. Geez, I ended up marrying him, didn't I?

Sometimes you find love when you least expect it.

Which leads to what I started to write at the beginning, I have not moved on. I was with my late husband for almost 20 years. You can't just forget that or sweep it under the rug. But I have moved "forward." I'm not sitting at home alone, crying every night and not living. I'm working, I'm writing, I have a wonderful man in my life again, and I am *happy.*

I could live another 40 years, or 4 days. Life is way too short. Whatever it is, I plan on being happy each and every day, even with all the stress that comes with life.

I think the biggest shock for everyone has been that now I have an instant family - three stepkids, two of which spend a week a month here. I actually like having the kids around, but believe me, when they go, it's a relief to have the house back in order. The dogs like them, too, but at their old age, they get worn out, so once a month is more than enough for all of us.

Today we're going back to Hampton Beach to have a late lunch at the same restaurant. Except this time we'll eat all of our lunch (last year we were too nervous to eat it all, ha ha). And we'll walk along the boardwalk again.

He's such a romantic. He makes me so happy.

Finally, the reception. . .

We had our wedding reception this past weekend on August 16th. Cass aka Foreverdarkness flew out here for the party. I was so excited - she came the furthest, from San Francisco and her flight got in late Friday night. We sat up drinking wine. I was just a tad hungover the next morning, ha ha.

We'd picked up Chris' two oldest kids the Monday before, so they'd helped us the whole week getting ready for the party and Chris' son helped him with his lawn work. We hit the beach a few times and when Chris' sister, Shari, arrived on Friday (she stayed in a hotel nearby with her daughter, a friend and her son and daughter), we shuttled them all to the beach. We actually were alone, just the two of us, for a few hours, but we still had things to get ready for the party, so we made the most of the time.

Now I wish we'd had this whole thing catered, etc. We ended up borrowing tables and chairs from a local church, bought pretty much all the food and beverages ourselves, some guests brought food, which helped a lot, and we set up two additional tents. Then decorate the tables, put the favors out, etc.

We'd gotten almost 70 people who RSVP'd that they'd come and we hoped they all wouldn't show up. Not because we didn't have enough room - we did. It's just we realized that was a lot of people to mingle with and entertain! Just under 50 showed up, a lot of my relatives, friends and Chris' sister, her daughter and some business acquaintances. Man, you really know who your friends are with events like this!

Chris and I barely made it into a shower (no, not together) just before 2 pm, when people started to show up. Since it was outside in our HUGE yard, we didn't have to worry about the inside of the house as much. We also rented two porta potties, which we decorated with Cowboy and Princess.

Why those? Well, Jason Michael Carroll, a country crooner, has this song called "Livin our Love Song." Part of the lyrics go:

"People said it would never work out
But living dreams, we shattered all doubts
Feels good to prove 'em wrong
Livin' our love song. . .
. . .Something like this just doesn't exist
Between a backwoods boy and a fairytale princess"

Unfortunately, a thunderstorm hit at about 4 pm and most of our relatives left. So the rest of us trooped into the house to do the champagne toast and cutting the cake. Then a musician we'd hired came at 6pm. We were a small, but enthusiastic audience!

Everyone left at around 930-10 pm and while Cass stayed up until 2 or so in the morning showing the musician guy how she plays World of Warcraft, Chris and I collapsed. The kids went to stay with our friend, Joanne, because Chris' son was supposed to sleep on the couch, but Cass and Mark, the musician were still in the living room. Bless Joanne for doing that!

The next morning, hungover, I began cleaning up. An hour or so later, Chris and Cass joined in, Joanne dropped the kids off, who also helped and we had the outside and house pretty much cleaned up by early afternoon.

My sister, her hubby, kids and my mom stopped by Sunday night to hang out for a bit. We were still tired. We crashed, but for some reason I woke up at 2 am and couldn't get back to sleep. I knew Cass had to leave for the airport by 530 am, so after she left, I finally slept.

Chris had to be at work by 9 am, so he let me sleep in. The kids were good about leaving me alone and at around 10 am, we all got up, had cereal, then returned things we'd borrowed from people for the party. They played on the Slip N Slide before putting it away, the porta potty people came to get their toilets and when Chris got out of work we drove the kids back to Massachusetts.

Oh, I supposed you all want to see photos, eh? I still have to get the disposable cameras developed (I couldn't find any inexpensive disposable digital ones), but here's the Reception photos taken in the house that night.

Enjoy!

Sweet Home Alabama...England?
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20080814/od_nm/birmingham_dc;_ylt=AnweiBKBBcydSzrKUYuK5lXtiBIF

Council chiefs in Birmingham were left red-faced when they mistakenly used a picture of their U.S. namesake in Alabama on thousands of official leaflets.

Pamphlets about recycling in the West Midlands bore an image showing the skyline of the city in the Deep South.

Under the headline "Thank You Birmingham!," the picture showed office blocks in the U.S. city, rather than its own distinctive Rotunda tower and the curvy Selfridges store.

The council said it had made a mistake, but had no plans to recall the leaflets.

"We accept that the wrong photo was used but the text and detail contained in the leaflet is wholly correct which is the most important message as we strive to further improve our green credentials," the council said Thursday.

Spanish shopkeeper finds Homer Simpson euro

A one euro coin has turned up in Spain bearing the face of cartoon couch potato Homer Simpson instead of that of the country's king, a sweetshop owner told Reuters on Friday.

Jose Martinez was counting the cash in his till in the city of Aviles, northern Spain, when he came across the coin where Homer's bald head, big eyes and big nose had replaced the serious features of King Juan Carlos.

"The coin must have been done by a professional, the work is impressive," he told Reuters.

The comical carver had not taken his tools to the other side of the coin displaying the map of Europe. So far, no other coins of the hapless, beer-swilling oaf have been found in circulation.

"I've been offered 20 euros for it," said Martinez.
