Vt. clerk foils robber with 'Let me call my wife'

A Vermont convenience store clerk foiled a robbery after the would-be robber demanded $200 cash. Said clerk Michael Patel: "Let me call my wife." With that, Vermont State Police said, a 21-year-old man ran from Ascutney Sunoco. He was later caught and charged with two counts of petty larceny. He pleaded not guilty Thursday in Vermont District Court.

Vermont State Police said the man who was on bail for a pending charge of stealing catalytic converters from cars told Patel he had a gun, but he didn't.

In an interview with the Valley News, the 38-year-old Patel said he and his wife, who've owned the store for four years, work hard for their money and don't want to give it away.

I couldn't make this up if I tried. . .Underwire included?

Men risk anticlimax with anatomy-boosting pants
http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/us_pants
Hundreds of British men are risking a Valentine's Day anticlimax for their partners by stocking up on anatomy-boosting underpants ahead of the most romantic weekend of the year.

British department store group Debenhams said Thursday it had seen a 76 percent surge in online sales of the 18 pounds-a-pair ($28) underwear in the past week.

The pants work by using a lift and hold feature at the front, like a male version of the cleavage-boosting Wonderbra.

"The briefs mean that no man ever needs to feel inadequate again on the most passionate day of the social calendar," said Rob Faucherand, head of men's accessories buying at Debenhams.

"However we can't be held responsible for what happens once the pants come off," he added.

Wyoming suspect flees into police station
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100206/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_bad_escape

Police say a man suspected of stealing a bottle of Schnapps from a Wyoming grocery store didn't have the best escape route planned.

Riverton police say the 26-year-old ran out of the store after grabbing the bottle of booze and a package of cough drops Wednesday and hid in a nearby building, which happened to be the police station.

Police say the man then ran out of the police station, but not before a dispatcher had spied him on the station's surveillance camera and alerted officers.

The man, who police say was drunk, was caught soon after. He was taken into custody on preliminary charges of resisting arrest and shoplifting.

I couldn't make this up if I tried. . .This chicken keeps crossing the street

Chicken plays chicken with drivers on busy street

A chicken playing chicken? That's what's happening on a busy Glendale street where a black hen has been dodging cars, captors and coyotes for two months. Officials say the bird has been darting into traffic outside Glendale Community College since it was first reported Nov. 20. The chicken has drawn a growing crowd of photographers and journalists as animal control officers struggle to catch it.

A spokeswoman for the Pasadena Humane Society, which handles animal control in Glendale, said the bird either runs onto the street or flies into a tree when officers approach. Hillary Gatlin said a humane trap has not worked because the chicken doesn't weigh enough to trigger it or she isn't interested in the feed used as bait.

Gatlin said the standoff could continue awhile.
