Teens arrested for robbing motorists stuck in snow
http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110123/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_stuck_in_snow_thefts

Three teens accused of robbing motorists stuck in the snow have been caught after you guessed it they got stuck in the snow themselves.

Prosecutors announced robbery and armed criminal action charges Friday against 18-year-old Darion O. Page of Kansas City, a 17-year-old and a 16-year-old.

The Kansas City Star reported that police found the teens stuck in a snowdrift early Thursday morning.

The victims' credit cards were among the items found in their vehicle.

Court documents say the 17-year-old denied participating in the robberies and told police that all he did was drive.

The documents say Page admitted being present, but he blamed the holdups on the 16-year-old. The Star says that teen declined to make a statement.

Police are trying to determine if Butts sold any fake jewelry to others before approaching Pace.

http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20110107/ap_on_fe_st/us_odd_arrested_anyway
Authorities in Montana say a man who had three outstanding warrants for his arrest gave officers a false name during a traffic stop but ended up in custody anyway because that man was also wanted.

Court records say that during a traffic stop Monday in Great Falls, Jonothan Ray Gonsalez, of Box Elder, told police that his name was Timothy Michael Koop Jr.

The officer learned a man by that name was wanted in Hill County and arrested him.

Police say a search of Gonsalez after his arrest turned up half a gram of methamphetamine in his jacket pocket and he was charged with criminal possession of dangerous drugs.

The Great Falls Tribune reports Gonsalez gave his real name on Tuesday, so a charge of issuing a false report to law enforcement was added.

Judy Herilla and Adam Lipinski were among hundreds of members of the Pittsburgh Polar Bear Club who jumped into the Monongahela River on New Year's Day.

Unlike the others, they had just gotten married aboard a water taxi.

Herilla, of Springdale, wore a veil and a long purple-and-white tutu with her swimsuit. Lipinski wore a T-shirt with a tuxedo design and shorts.

They had considered waiting to get married until Nov. 11, so their anniversary would be 11-11-11, but settled for 1-1-11 and jumping into the 37-degree water.

Three glasses of mulled cider later and I began to meditate on the aspects of sharing our lives, our work and our love online.

http://www.techdirt.com/articles/20101226/23370012415/shouldnt-we-fix-check-clearing-loophole-that-so-many-scammers-abuse.shtml
Slashdot points us to a recent story about a guy who lost his lawsuit against a bank, over a variation on a classic Nigerian email scam. The scam is one we've discussed many times in the past: somehow the victim gets a big check, which they're expected to deposit in a bank. After the check "clears," the victim/recipient is supposed to transfer a large chunk of that money to the scammer, on the belief that they get to keep whatever is left over.
